FURTHER PRIZE DETAILS
This historic full sovereign was struck in 1864, during the reign of Queen Victoria.
The obverse carries William Wyon’s celebrated Young Head portrait of the Queen, surrounded by the legend VICTORIA DEI GRATIA and the date beneath the portrait.
The reverse features Jean Baptiste Merlen’s crowned Royal Arms shield within a wreath. This distinctive heraldic design gives the coin its familiar Shield Back name and makes it immediately recognisable among Victorian sovereigns.
A small die number can also be seen beneath the shield. Die numbers appeared on sovereigns between 1863 and 1874 and were used by The Royal Mint as part of its production controls.
A full sovereign of this type was struck in 22ct gold, with a standard weight of approximately 7.98g, a diameter of approximately 22.05mm and around 7.32g of pure gold content.
The coin has been professionally tested and verified by Gold Bank Jewellers. As a historic circulating-era coin, its exact condition and surface characteristics are shown in the accompanying photographs.
