FURTHER PRIZE DETAILS
First introduced in 1967, the South African Krugerrand became one of the world’s most recognised and widely traded gold bullion coins.
The coin is struck in 22ct gold with a fineness of .9167. It contains exactly 1 troy ounce of fine gold and has a total weight of 33.93g.
The additional copper within the alloy gives the Krugerrand its distinctive warm colour while making the coin stronger and more resistant to scratches than a pure-gold bullion coin.
The obverse features a portrait of Paul Kruger, the former President of the South African Republic, surrounded by the inscriptions “SUID-AFRIKA” and “SOUTH AFRICA”.
The reverse depicts South Africa’s famous springbok antelope alongside the 1981 date and the coin’s fine-gold content in both Afrikaans and English.
The name “Krugerrand” combines Paul Kruger’s surname with the rand, South Africa’s national currency.
